ga powerHow a VFD Pays for Itself:This week Stromquist hosted a Drive to Savings Day with Siemens and GA Power to educate our customers on the benefits of Variable Frequency Drives and GA Power’s current rebate programs for VFDs and other HVAC equipment. Most people already know that installing a VFD can save money by cutting back on the energy it takes to run equipment, but not everyone is aware that there are additional savings to reap by taking advantage of GA Power’s rebate opportunity. For any NEW drive installed on existing equipment, GA Power will issue a $50 per HP rebate. So a 20 HP drive will bring a $1000 rebate. Add that to the money saved in energy costs, and the new drive will pay for itself very quickly!

EasyIO’s World Event Presentation Highlights: (ControlTrends gives special thanks to Anja Nilsen, from Bergen, Norway, for helping out with the photography and videography!)

realmadridGuido van Erp: Welcome and review of Agenda. Anyone who has coordinated a world-wide meeting on this scope can appreciate the prodigious preparations and successful delivery of dinners and golfing. The VIP executive business center inside of Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Real Madrid’s Soccer Stadium, was enough, but the tour of the locker room, walking the pitch, and sitting on the players’ bench, and the lighter than air portrayal of Real Madrid’s prolific history was absolutely amazing. The crescendo Flamingo guitarist banquet was truly a befitting finale!

Easy IO’s Mike Marston: The most advanced open controller to date, the FG-32+ Mega Beast product launch is around the 4th quarter’s bend, and EasyIO’s new VAV initiatives with Belimo are prefaced with “shock and awe” warnings, because the next version of the FG-32+ with its Belimo driver will be able to discover all the Belimo DCA’s on your MP Bus network. You heard that right.

Easy IO’s Lim Hoon Chiat: Speaking as one of the industry’s most accomplished masters of technology (patents), EasyIO’s product road map opens the Linux side up for ambitious integrators, and there will be more memory, 3X faster processor speeds, and more drivers will be added to the existing tool sets. (C’mon… give everybody else a chance to catch up.)

Johan Schakenraad : CEO at EasyIO, Europe B.V: The Residential is the World’s first real BMS in a Box and Easy IO’s fast-track success in Europe — 103 partners in three years, has not been left to chance. Johan Schakenraad’s vast industry experience has traversed and converted many of the well-worn BMS integration paths with EasyIO and with his enormously talented team, Johan is looking anxiously across the waters.

Pedro Jorge, CTO at EasyIO Europe: EnOcean technology adds another fully developed technology to the EasyIO product offering. EnOcean opens up not only the Residential market, but the hospitality suite market as well. The days of intrusive installations are almost over — and the reductions to both the installation and operational costs are two of the most critical price drivers in an increasingly competitive market.

Barry Light, Fire and Ice, LLC: Special presentation on the EasyIO’s “Barry-App” for AON. The EasyIO FG-32 controller gave Barry, one of the leading experts on AON integration, HTML5, unceasing support through the critical path development phase, the additional memory and speed features he wanted, while eliminating the license issue and delayed support.

BelimoBelimo’s Chris Jones and Tom Daenzer: First order of business was the opening of Belimo’s new 200,000 square feet production facility in Danbury, CT, facility, and the significance of the MP Bus story, that presents the realization — that every one of your Belimo DCA’s and Energy valves (which ALREADY have MP Bus embedded communications in them), means that when the integration moment is right, you’ll be able to add them to your network, using EasyIO’s FG-32+. As Belimo continues its partnerships, especially with EasyIO, it will continue to change the world of VAV’s and the best way to integrate buildings — conceptually, and one day, may include residential market.

Mobile Air, Inc. is a specialty HVAC company dealing exclusively in portable air conditioning, heating, filtration, and dehumidification systems, for both temporary and long term solutions.

SensorsEVERYWHERESensors, Sensors Everywhere: In the Near Future, Structures and Systems Will Look After Themselves. Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) began in the early 1800′s with railroad wheel-tappers, which used the sound of a hammer striking the train wheel to evaluate if damage was present. The IoT sensor proliferation that continues to increase the number of application instances will soon deliver this significant SHM concept, which is similar, yet different, than our Fault Detection and Diagnostics — nearer and nearer to our workstations (cautious optimism). Science and Technology from Los Alamos.

Tom SIntelligent Buildings’ Tom Shircliff at IBCON 2014: The Technology is Here, Let’s Get Started! Intelligent Buildings is a well-known and leading-edge consultancy company in the smart building business. Veteran Tom Shircliff elegantly brings to light that the technology, all of the smart technology pieces needed for New Buildings, for Building Retrofits, for Building Analytics, and for Building Systems Cyber Security are here, but the challenge is how to scale this available technology into starting points — where building owners can get under-whelmed and start faster, with less risks, and all the while, make enlightened decisions quicker through Intelligent Building’s organizational alignment approach and the creation of a common language that all the stakeholders can understand.

This week’s Podcast of ControlTalk NOW is sponsored by Platinum Sponsors Delta Controls and CopperTree Analytics. CTN makes a case for the rebound of the local distributors as the Amazon Law gets more teeth and residents will pay either sales tax or use tax, but the States insist, they will have their money. Intelligent Building Tips; Target’s Cyber attack update; Video of KMC’s SimplyVAV; EasyIO’s Madrid Conference and Mike Marston’s interview take center stage; 2013 CTA PID Award Winners; DOE’s Framework for Connected Equipment; and would you believe — the Water Whistleblower APP.

delta_controls_logo Delta Controls. Do it Right! Delta Controls is one of the largest independent manufacturers of building automation systems with more than 300 installers in over 80 countries. For more than 3 decades Delta Controls has offered dependable and user-friendly building control solutions to commercial, healthcare, education, leisure buildings and more. coppertreeFor more than 30 years CopperTree’s parent companies Delta Controls (one of the largest independent building controls manufacturers) and ESC (Western Canada’s largest building systems integrator) have been at the forefront of creating SMART buildings. Long before ‘sustainable’ was a buzz word the founders were involved in energy audits and consulting; and so it was a natural extension to create CopperTree in response to the growing demand for building energy management services.

target_3Target Estimates Data Breach at $148 Million. Read Target’s Updates on Security and Technology Enhancements: The 2013 Target data breach is a permanent and important reference point in hacking history. According to the Forbes and The Associated Press news releases last week, Target has estimated their hacking losses at $148 million, minus a $38 million insurance receivable (about 11 cents a share). Still being calculated are the damages to Target’s reputation, profits, and a host of lawsuits, not to mention the negative impact the breach has had on Target’s expansion into Canada.

KMC.001How KMC Makes VAV Control Simple: Simple to set up, with no software needed, this controller is powerful and functions equally as well as a stand-alone solution or the VAV controller of choice on a BACnet full-blown control system. The SimplyVAV series of controllers are an easy and unique approach to operating a wide variety of VAV terminal units. MikeMarstonSeptember RACA Interview with Mike Marston, Co-Owner of EasyIO Holdings Pte Ltd. What trends can be picked up on the global BMS market? What’s new? IT is changing the BMS world, for the better. More and more IP based Controllers are now being connected to the IT Infrastructure in a Building, as the barrier of RS 485 twisted pair cable being cheaper, seems to be finally changing. IT professionals know that so much more can be achieved through Ethernet cable and IT infrastructure, such as, fast online programming, real time, and with the old ways of compile, download and ‘pray’!

easyio.1ControlTrends Award HighLight: The PID Award. Congratulations to Ed Merwin from Tridium and Mike Marston from Easy IO, co winners of the 2013 ControlTrends PID Award. eere_illust_bldgAugust DOE Release: A Framework for Characterizing Connected Equipment. For those of the ControlTrends Community following the most recent DOE referee guidance concerning the direction and pace of technological innovation in the Smart Grid industry, which includes “the dynamic management of residential and commercial building end-use loads,” brought about by the increasing connectivity available within the residential and commercial space, and/or the ability to control the equipment externally/remotely, this August 2014, DOE, EERE, Building Technologies Program report, articulates and illustrates, very succinctly, the intelligent minutiae being used to unfold the inevitable universality and implementation of the Smart Grid.

everydrop2Water Whistleblower APP — Meet EveryDrop – A Water Conservation Platform. Light Litter is Next! We are still wondering how long it will take for Light Litter to become a serious matter of national importance, and by what means could we begin to remedy it — not only because it’s a terrible waste of energy and money (tax money, mostly), but also because it’s completely fixable. Public patience with wasting water, at least in LA, has expired and led to the first known APP to blow the whistle on water abusers. The negative idea of blowing the whistle on thy neighbor is another one of those duller-edge sides of the sword that results from trying to fix collective apathy.

IoTBoyTherese Sullivan Asks — How do You Spell IoT Smart Building Analytics? All the Big IT companies are running campaigns touting their role in the coming Internet of Things (IoT) computing era. A common vision is that software, particularly mobile apps, will reign supreme over embedded systems-on-a-chip, sensors, wireless communications and other components making more of the physical world digitally addressable. But, it is building automation and control firms – sometimes called OT, or operations technology companies – that have had to slog through decades of navigating relationships with big equipment makers to tap silo-ed data and do the necessary integration.

Executive Briefing — Cybersecurity — Points That Need to be Part of the Conversation: By Marc Petock, Vice President, Marketing, Lynxspring, Inc. Today’s connected business world means there are thousands of entry points in and out of companies. The truth is that network security does not work as well as we thought. Hacks, breaches, vulnerabilities, threats we can’t ignore them. They are undesired events. Cyber threats are changing constantly. Threats are targeted, and they continue to get even more targeted. It used to be a virus was thrown out there and whomever it hit, it hit.

DGLogik_SurferTherese Sullivan Reviews DGLux5 Training – Hop Aboard the Future Express: It’s easy to bat around the term “Internet of Things.” But until you’re in a room full of interface designers trying to make the implied thousands and thousands of connections visible and manageable—you don’t appreciate what it means. I came to this realization while attending the 3-day DGLux5 Introductory training course last week near San Francisco. It’s also now clear why the DGLogik brand mascot is a futuristic space-traveler: the DGLux5 users in that room were well on their way to defining how building operations will be accomplished tomorrow.

FredGordySocial Engineering and the Cyber Black Market: In movies you see some guy sitting at his computer banging away at the keys and creating sophisticated algorithms that can go around advanced cyber security measures or can crack strong passwords or anything else that looks really cool for the camera The reality is (and not as glamorous) that hackers can shop for hacking tools online. Or better yet, they can ask you how to get into your system and you will tell them. Social engineering, if you are not familiar with the term, means basically a “con game” to get information needed to access networks/equipment.

Young Samuel asked his father, “Where does all that water come from?” The way I remember it, his father smacked him on the back of the head and didn’t answer.

VEM-Diagram (1)“Just Because” — Improved Energy Efficiency Insights from Marc Petock, Vice President, Marketing at Lynxspring. Lynxspring is changing the way devices and systems communicate and collaborate across enterprises. Energy efficiency continues to be the largest contributing factor to flat-lining electricity use. The decline is due to many factors, from changing weather and economic recessions to the wider adoption of energy efficiency measures. But it is the latter that might explain the trend in recent years, according to a new study from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy.

PublicPrivacyPublic Privacy — An Oxymoron Worthy of Consideration. This ControlTrends post takes a small step towards addressing the enormous subject of Public Privacy as it pertains to Big Data. The boundless use and proliferation of Big Data is now everywhere at once — for every conceivable purpose from medical diagnoses and corresponding treatment plans, advertising networks, data brokers, insurance providers, smart grid operators and energy usage managers (our insertion point to this subject), public and private traffic management, border control, access to employment, criminal investigations and sentencing, justice authorities, scientists, the granting of social welfare, and combating social security fraud. The benefits are all too obvious. But what next? IBM has introduced “autonomic computing.”

led-lf-logo_webThe Basics of LED Lighting and Why LED Lighting is the Future: Unlike incandescent and fluorescent lamps, LEDs are not inherently white light sources. Instead, LEDs emit nearly monochromatic light, making them highly efficient for colored light applications such as traffic lights and exit signs. However, to be used as a general light source, white light is needed. White light can be achieved with LEDs in three ways:
• Phosphor conversion, in which a phosphor is used on or near the LED to convert the colored light to white light; • RGB systems, in which light from multiple monochromatic LEDs (red, green, and blue) is mixed, resulting in white light; and • A hybrid method, which uses both phosphor-converted and monochromatic LEDs.
